Kelly Lake to Allouez tells the story of how the Great Northern Railroad transported one billion tons of iron ore from the Northern Minnesota iron mines to Kelly Lake and on to the ore docks of Allouez, Wisconsin, where the iron ore was loaded into the ore boats. The four Great Northern ore docks made up the largest iron loading facility in the world. The ore boats, once loaded, carried the ore to the eastern steel mills. |

Doug Addison's interest in model railroading dates back to 1968, when he lived in Willmar, Minnesota. He developed a particular interest in the Great Northern (GN) on the Mesabi Iron Range in Minnesota and the four GN ore docks at Allouez, Wisconsin. In 2002, the information he collected was published in his first book, Great Northern Railway: Ore Docks of Lake Superior Photo Archive. Doug had a heart for history, and the more he learned about the iron mining industry and the railroad's part in it, the more he felt compelled to record the stories of those who did the work. The size and scope of the operation was impressive, but could not have been done without the people. This book was written to preserve some of their stories and honor them for their dedication. For the last seven years of his life, Doug had a degenerative lung disease. His last road trip was in February of 2008, when he drove through a blizzard to Green Bay, WIsconsin, in order to get the information he needed to complete this book. Doug died on February 28, 2008, with the basic manuscript completed. With the help of his publisher, Harry Stockhausen, and good friend, Lee Thompson, Doug's family is grateful to be able to share Doug's book. Author Web Site: http://www.amazon.com |
